2011 to Present
Since 2004, Ted Owens has been a professor of music and musical theatre at Truckee Meadows Community College where he teaches music theory, music appreciation, applied voice, piano, and composition, musical theatre, and conducts the college concert choir. Owens’ academic degrees are in music composition: Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the University of Oklahoma and Doctor of Musical Arts (ABD) with a doctoral minor in ethnomusicology and music in general studies from the University of Arizona.
Owens was voted “Best Professor” by the readers of the Reno News & Review for four consecutive years and is one of the college’s most popular professors. In addition to serving Northern Nevada as an educator, he also serves as the director of music at First Congregational Church of Reno.
Owens has extensive experience in musical theatre as an actor, musician, and musical director for over 30 shows and is part of the team of musical theatre professionals at TMCC that has consistently produced some of the finest musical theatre performances in the Truckee Meadows including shows like Sweeney Todd, Jesus Christ Superstar, Into the Woods, Spring Awakening, Next to Normal, and The Who’s Tommy.
Ted has served as the Artistic Director for the Nevada Gay Men’s Chorus since the 2011 winter concert and is thrilled to be one of the driving forces that propels this amazing group of individuals into the future as they claim their place in the artistic landscape of Northern Nevada.
